Real Madrid in control in Spain

A single goal from Sergio Ramos was enough to ensure Real Madrid remained at the top of the Primera Liga as Bernd Schuster earned a win at his former club Getafe.

Ramos struck after 65 minutes, but it was hard luck on Getafe who twice hit the woodwork and drew a number of fine saves from Iker Casillas in an open encounter.

The win proved vital for Real as Villarreal and Valencia kept up their good form with 1-0 victories.

Athletic Bilbao became the latest team to be brushed aside by Manuel Pellegrini's side, thanks to centre-back Fabricio Fuentes' second-half goal.

Villarreal made it five wins in six league matches this season, and 13 in their last 14 stretching back to the last campaign.

A David Villa strike after just five minutes gave Valencia their fifth straight Primera Liga victory, coming at the expense of Recreativo Huelva.

Valencia defended the lead for the remainder of the match against a Recre side that was reduced to 10 men when Jorge Carlos Martins was sent off in the closing minutes. Sergio Aguero continued to set the La Liga alight as he sealed a 2-0 win for Atletico Madrid against Osasuna on Sunday.

Raul Garcia had sung the praises of Aguero going into the match but he upstaged his teammate by grabbing the opener seven minutes before the interval.

But Aguero would have the final say as he killed the match with a memorable second eight minutes from time.

Aguero has now scored five goals in six Primera Liga matches and helped the Atletico fans cope with the loss of Fernando Torres to Liverpool in the summer.

Raul Tamudo marked his return to the Espanyol first team with a goal as the Barcelona-based side beat Deportivo La Coruna 1-0 at Montjuic on Sunday and moved up to sixth place.

The talismanic captain came off the bench to give his team a dramatic last-gasp win over Sevilla last Tuesday and was back on target just before half-time to secure a third victory of the season for Ernesto Valverde's side.

Real Murcia were made to work hard by the nine men of Real Valladolid before three goals in the last 15 minutes gave them a somewhat flattering 4-1 victory.

In appalling conditions as the rain drenched the Estadio Jose Zorrilla pitch, Daniel Cifuentes was dismissed after just 26 minutes and Enrique De Lucas gave the visitors the lead shortly after.

Valladolid were forced to play the best part of an hour two men light when goalkeeper Ludovic Butelle also saw red, but the nine men claimed an unlikely equaliser through Joseba Llorente four minutes after the break.

The hosts held out impressively until Fernando Baiano scored in the 75th minute, a goal which opened the floodgates as Daniel Ivan Alonso and Abel got in on the act.

Ezequiel Garay scored in the seventh minute to give Racing Santander a 1-0 win at Almeria, while second-half goals from Xisco, Rafael Sobis and Edu gave Real Betis a 3-0 win over Real Mallorca, who had Sergio Ballesteros sent off.
