Top sides progress in Spanish Cup after scares

It was an uncomfortable night for three Primera Liga clubs in the fourth round of the King's Cup on Wednesday, but all survived to make into the next round.

The Primera Liga's basement club Athletic Bilbao, Cup winners 23-times, looked to be in trouble against third division Hospitalet before they hit back to win 3-1.

Bilbao gifted the home side the opening goal after 40 minutes when a defensive mix up allowed Quique Carcel to score.

Three goals in 10 second-half minutes spared Bilbao's blushes. Midfielder Fran Yeste stroked in the equaliser in the 56th minute, and young striker Fernando Llorente scored with a clever lob and a header soon after.

Getafe and Celta Vigo were both taken to extra time.

Bernd Schuster's Getafe had to come from behind to level the scores at 2-2 in normal time, after second division strugglers Lleida had twice taken the lead through Brazilian striker Luiz Carlos.

Serbia & Montenegro striker Veljko Paunovic completed a hat-tick in extra time, while Daniel Guiza scored Getafe's third for a 4-2 win.

Celta Vigo, who are fourth in the Primera Liga, drew 0-0 in normal time with third division Baza, and only avoided penalties thanks to Borja Oubina's goal in the final minute of extra time.

Cadiz beat Burgos 2-0, while Zamora became the only third division club to make it to the next stage, beating second division Eibar on penalties after drawing 1-1.

Two games are still to be played in the fourth round.

Atletico Madrid's match against Alcoyano and Real Zaragoza's against second division leaders Xerez are taking place on Nov. 30, as both sides have players on international duty.

The Cup holders Real Betis and the eight other sides who have competed in Europe this season join the competition in the next round, due to be played in January.

Four top-flight clubs -- Real Mallorca, Malaga, Racing Santander and Real Sociedad -- went out to lower league opposition in the previous round.
