Super sub Giggs puts United into quarter-finals

Substitute Ryan Giggs fired Manchester United into the Champions League quarter-finals on Tuesday after scoring twice in an emphatic 3-0 victory over Juventus in Group D of the second phase.

Giggs, linked with a move to Inter Milan by the Italian press on Tuesday, replaced injured Uruguayan striker Diego Forlan after eight minutes and steered home Juan Sebastian Veron's square pass from close range in the 15th minute at the Stadio Delle Alpi.

The Welshman followed up with a stunning second just before the break, setting off on a solo run from the halfway line, before being substituted in the 49th minute with a thigh injury by Dutch striker Ruud van Nistelrooy, who tapped in the third.

The victory, against a Juventus side who had not conceded a goal at home in the Champions League in more than a year but whose defending on Tuesday was sloppy, brought up United's fourth win in as many second phase games.

In a hectic first half, Juventus defender Ciro Ferrara hit the post and French striker David Trezeguet had a penalty appeal turned down before sending a powerful header against the crossbar, while United's Nicky Butt also found the woodwork.

The Italian champions, whose scratch team were beaten 2-1 at Old Trafford last week, also had plenty of possession in the second half but continued a pattern of poor finishing up front and defensive blunders at the back.
