Stars turn out for Figo's charity match

Portuguese star Luis Figo's All Stars charity football match drew a massive crowd as the game ended 3-3 in Faro.

The 31-year-old appeared for a Portuguese XI coached by World Cup winning handler Luiz Felipe Scolari against an international XI under the guidance of Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson.

The match was marked by a minute's silence in memory of Manuel Quaresma, the general-secretary of the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) and one of the main organisers of the highly successful Euro 2004 tournament, who died suddenly on Sunday aged 49.

Figo's fellow members of the 'golden generation' that won the 1991 World Youth Championship, Fernando Couto and Rui Costa, also part of the squad that reached the Euro 2004 final last week and which lost 1-0 to Greece, played as did one of the new generation of homegrown talent Cristiano Ronaldo.

The International XI featured retired Dutch captain Frank de Boer, Spanish international striker and a Real Madrid team-mate of Figo's Fernando Morientes as well as another Real star Ronaldo, German playmaker Michael Ballack and Germany's six-time Formula One world champion Michael Schumacher fresh from his victory in the British Grand Prix on Sunday.

The proceeds from the match will go to The Luis Figo Foundation which provides for disadvantaged children.
