Speculation Over Simao Future

Simao Sabrosa told the Portuguese media that he is willing to move on if Benfica wish to sell him. This news is of interest to Bobby Robson's Newcastle, who have been observing the speedy winger for sometime. However, Benfica will not sell the player for any less than 16 million pounds.

Newcastle are unwilling to pay this fee, but it is rumoured that the likes of Real Madrid will not be put off by this high transfer fee. With Steve McManaman set to exit the Spanish giants, it is rumoured that Simao is on the short list of players to fill the void. Look for Luis Figo to help sway the Madrid management into acquiring the player, as he did at Barcelona.

Benfica however, are interested in acquiring the services of Hugo Viana from Newcastle. Although Robson is unwilling to part with Viana look for a possible exchange to occur in which Viana would be loaned out to Benfica for one season.

Another factor in whether or not Simao remains at Benfica is manager Jose Camacho. He has stated that Benfica need to hang on to players like Simao at all costs, if they want to have a bright future. Camacho is yet to renew his contract with the Lisbon eagles stating that qualification into the Champions League must be secured in order for him to sign with the club.

Simao has been Benfica's best player this season and leads the Portuguese League in scoring despite playing in midfield. It is hard to imagine Benfica having any success against Europe's bigger squads without Simao in the lineup.

Benfica, however, are strapped for cash, and may want to cash in by selling Simao. His contract expires in 2006.
