Rayo certainly did their more illustrious neighbours a favour by holding the defending champions to a draw and Real continue to enjoy a comfortable advantage at the top of the table with just five games remaining.
Real are eight points clear at the top and as they enjoy a better head-to-head record against the Galician side it will take a minor miracle for Depor to retain their title.
Third-placed Valencia made hard work of their 2-1 win against nine-man Real Sociedad, but have now closed to within two points of Deportivo.
Real Mallorca missed a golden opportunity to consolidate their fourth place ahead of Barcelona as they slumped to a 1-0 defeat at Osasuna.
It is now mathematically impossible for Barcelona to win the title, but they did manage to move within three points of the Balearic islanders in the all-important race for Champions League places following their 0-0 draw in the city derby against Espanyol.
