Spain stroll to 4-0 win over Andorra

Spain eased their way to a comfortable 4-0 win over Andorra in Getafe on Saturday in their final warm-up before departing for Euro 2004.

First-half strikes from Fernando Morientes and Ruben Baraja, a second-half header from centre back Cesar and a fine individual goal from Juan Carlos Valeron meant Spain ended their week-long training camp on a high.

"I was able to make some positive conclusions from this game and the best thing of all was the effort shown by the players," coach Inaki Saez said.

Saez fielded his first choice line-up at the start of the game bar midfielder Vicente, who was rested after complaining of minor muscle pain during Friday's training session.

But it was Andorra who made the more enthusiastic start as they closed down the midfield and put in some muscular challenges on the Spanish strikers.

Spain were slow to warm to the task, but gradually took control towards the middle of the first half as Baraja bossed the centre of midfield and Vicente's replacement Albert Luque found room on the wing. Monaco striker Morientes put the home side ahead midway in the 25th minute when he prodded in from five metres out after a neat through-ball from Baraja.

The Valencia midfielder made it 2-0 on the stroke of halftime after Andorra keeper Koldo had parried his penalty after Raul had been brought down in the area.

Saez changed his outfield players at haltime and was given plenty to think about his theoretical second-string line-up with midfielders Xavi, Valeron and Joaquin adding another dimension.

Cesar headed home from a well struck Albert Luque corner 20 minutes after the break and Valeron completed an easy win with a neatly crafted goal a minute from time when he latched on to a fine pass from Barcelona midfielder Xavi.

Saez said: "The first half was more of a battle and we had to work hard, but in the second the game opened up as we took advantage of their tiredness."

Spain leave for Portugal on Sunday to prepare for their opening Group A match against Russia on June 12. They meet Greece four days later and then play the hosts in their final group game on June 20.
