Spain promise attacking approach against Portugal

Spain need just a draw from Sunday's decisive Euro 2004 Group A battle with Portugal but coach Inaki Saez has ruled out a cautious approach.

"We're not one of those sides that can just keep things tight and get a goalless draw," Saez said on Saturday.

"I prefer to play to our own style, which is to go out and aim for victory."

Spain and Greece both have four points in Group A, with Portugal on three and Russia already eliminated after two defeats.

Nothing less than victory would be good enough for Portugal in the Iberian derby at the Jose Alvalade stadium, while a draw would send Spain through regardless of the result in the other match.

Saez would like to see his side clinch a quarter-final place with a convincing win but he saw in Italy's 1-1 draw against Sweden a reminder that the result is more important than the performance.

"The Italy v Sweden game was one of the most beautiful you could hope to see," Saez said. "Italy were playing extraordinary football."

"I haven't seen anything like that in a long time but the match ended in a draw and any kind of win would have been better for Italy."

Spain will have the crowd against them as Portugal look to snatch a place in the quarter-finals but the setting could work to Saez's side advantage.

"I wouldn't like to be in Portugal's position," Saez said after the squad's arrival in Lisbon. "We have a better chance of going through."

"The atmosphere at the stadium will be a factor but we have to show that we're the sort of side that can win in a situation like this. That would give us a great confidence boost to go on even further."
