Solari to fight for place

Real Madrid midfielder Santiago Solari has vowed to fight to win a regular place in the side this season despite the presence of Zidane and Figo.

Solari, who joined the Madrilenos from neighbours Atletico Madrid two summers ago, only figured 14 times in the side last season but his sparkling pre-season displays have prompted coach Vicente Del Bosque to re-consider his contribution.

Solari, an academic who is currently using his free time to write a book, told Spanish daily Marca on Wednesday: "When you're at a club like Real Madrid, then you have to get used to the competition for a place in the team."

"There are some great players here and the struggle to make the first team is good for both the side and the club. I'm aware of what I'm facing here but the only solution is to work hard."

"My aim this year is to fight to win a place in the eleven and take advantage of every single opportunity that arises."

The eloquent Argentinean reckons that there is no cause for concern at the club despite slumping 1-0 in the first game of the season at Valencia.

"We've won the Supercup and besides that, the only other thing that has happened is our defeat to one of the top teams, Valencia," he added.

"I can't see any major problems at the club, people have voiced their opinions about our start to the season but maybe they are being a bit hasty."
