Shevchenko goal gives Milan win over Real

A 40th minute Andriy Shevchenko goal gave AC Milan a 1-0 win over European champions Real Madrid in an oustanding Champions League Group C match on Tuesday.

Portuguese midfielder Rui Costa split the Real defence with a perfect through ball into the path of the Ukrainian who fired past Real keeper Iker Casillas.

Both sides created ample chances in a hugely entertaining match and Real thought they had equalised after a goalline scramble followed a Zidane header near the end but the linesman flagged for offside.

But an impressive Milan, who never sat back on their lead but continued to attack, deserved the win against a Real side without Brazilian Ronaldo.
