Sevilla to play Madrid or Atlético in Super Cup

Sevilla's UEFA Europa League victory means they will play either Real Madrid or Atlético in the third straight all-Spanish UEFA Super Cup in Trondheim on 9 August.

Sevilla will face Spanish opposition for the third consecutive UEFA Super Cup after winning the UEFA Europa League to earn a place in Trondheim on 9 August.

The victory against Liverpool in Basel has given Sevilla their fifth berth in the August event, all as winners of the UEFA Cup/UEFA Europa League. They will discover their opponents on 28 May when Atlético Madrid and Real Madrid face off for the UEFA Champions League title in Milan.

In 2006, Sevilla beat Barcelona 3-0 in Monaco on debut before losing 3-1 to AC Milan 12 months later in an occasion overshadowed by the death of Sevilla player Antonio Puerta three days earlier. In Cardiff, in 2014, Real Madrid won 2-0 against Sevilla, who then went down 5-4 after extra time last year against Barcelona in Tbilisi, watched by a record 51,940 crowd.

Whatever happens on 9 August, Spain will extend their lead as the most titled UEFA Super Cup nation. They already have the most victories – 12 – and the largest number of appearances – 22 – statistics guaranteed to increase to 13 and 24 respectively.

In the 16 games since the UEFA Cup/UEFA Europa League winners began to participate, the score has been 9-7 to the UEFA Champions League holders thanks to Barcelona beating Sevilla last year. That means the UEFA Champions League holders have won all three matches since the switch from Monaco; a fourth victory in a row would be a new record.
