Real have opened talks with Lazio about acquiring Chilean marksman Marcelo Salas, who they see as the next strike partner of Raul Gonzalez.
Real officials met with Salas' agents, Gustavo Mascardi and Fernando Hidalgo on Tuesday to start the bidding for the striker. Real are willing to pay Lazio $US 10m for Salas, although the Romans could stand their ground for the $US 16m price tag pinned on the player.
Lazio need to reduce their increasing debts and are only considering a cash deal for Salas.
The Italians have told Real Madrid to come back next week after they have dealt with the final game of the season at Lecce, where they will be contesting the Scudetto with Juventus and Roma.
