The reigning La Liga champions could not have started the defence of their crown in a worse manner when they crashed to their sixth successive defeat at Deportivo La Coruña and effectively stretching their 17 year winless jinx at the Riazor.
Although it is just the first game of the season, Madrid’s defensive frailties have already been exposed as they conceded both goals from dead-ball situations. And defender Sergio Ramos lamented the error he and his fellow teammates committed.
“Both their goals came from set-pieces. It hurts to lose, but these are just small errors that we made and we have a long time to try and correct them because this is only the first day,” he said in the post-match conference.
Striker Ruud van Nistelrooy, who had cancelled out Mista’s 27th minute opener, echoed his teammate’s sentiments.
“We have to be more alert when it comes to set-pieces. It’s not the best way to begin the season, but these things can happen,” the Dutchman affirmed.
“They are only minor errors but in the end, it prevented us from winning our first game,” he concluded.
