Ronaldo injury will delay his Madrid debut

World Cup star Ronaldo will not make his debut with Real Madrid in the Champions League on Wednesday because of a strained left calf.

Coach Vicente Del Bosque said Ronaldo was injured Monday and missed a morning training session Tuesday. He said Ronaldo would not be fit to play against Racing Genk in Wednesday's Champions League match.

"Ronaldo will not play on medical advice," Del Bosque said. "His injury is nothing serious, and he was not signed to play in one match, nor for a month, but for five years. I hope to have him available soon."

Del Bosque did not say whether Ronaldo would recover in time to make his debut in Madrid's next league game at Valladolid on Saturday.

The Brazilian striker hasn't played in a competitive game since the World Cup final. He scored both of Brazil's goals in its victory over Germany, giving him a tournament-high eight total.

Del Bosque also said that injured French midfielders Zinedine Zidane and Claude Makelele, who missed Madrid's 4-1 victory over Osasuna Saturday, might play Wednesday.

Zidane has an inflamed right knee, while Makelele has a strained ligament in his left knee.
