Roma upset Real with 1-0 victory at the Bernabeu

Roma have become the first Italian side to beat Real Madrid on their home territory in 35 years after a Francesco Totti goal saw them claim a memorable 1-0 win at the Bernabeu in an absorbing Group C match.

The Italian striker, who was a menace to the Real defence throughout, fired home past keeper Iker Casillas on 27 minutes after a rebound from a Vincenzo Montella shot had dropped into his path.

The result, combined with Genk's 1-1 draw at AEK Athens, means no team has yet qualified from the group, although Real and Roma are in the best position to go through to the second group phase.

The defending European champions, anxious to put their recent run of poor form behind them, had taken the early initiative as they probed the Roma defence and took control in the midfield.

But Real were unable to put the finishing touch to some neat passing moves and it was the Italian side that began to look increasingly dangerous as Montella and Totti did their best to tease open the Real defence.

Real took up the challenge after the Roma goal but despite some spirited attacking play they were unable to work their past the alert Roma defence and the Italians were unlucky not to extend their lead as they threatened on the break.
