Roma's Capello aims to beat Spurs for Morientes

AS Roma trainer Fabio Capello is determined to beat Tottenham for Real Madrid striker Fernando Morientes.

The Spanish international is a target for both clubs and is expected to be moved on by Real this month.

Capello was in Madrid yesterday to watch Real's 4-1 thumping of Valencia. He wants to secure Morientes in June on a permanent transfer, identifying the striker as the ideal replacement for Gabriel Batistuta.

Spurs are also chasing Morientes, with reports suggesting the London club is seeking a loan deal for the rest of the season.

The sticking point is that Tottenham wants Real to cover a percentage of Morientes' wages.
