Roberto Carlos may become Spanish citizen

Real Madrid left back Roberto Carlos has reportedly set up a meeting with Jorge Valdano, sports director of the club, to discuss the possibility of becoming a naturalized Spanish citizen.

The player has spent six years in Spain so far and is seeking a dual citizenship. It is expected that Carlos would not want to lose his Brazilian citizenship so that he would still be able to play with his homeland’s national side.

The Spain has liberal rules governing the naturalization of players. A player can apply for citizenship after just two years. But La Liga is on par with other Europe leagues in that teams can only have four non-EU players per squad.
