Roberto Carlos denies demanding Real Madrid transfer

Brazil World Cup winner Roberto Carlos has angrily denied demanding a transfer after Real Madrid coach Mariano Garcia Remon left him on the bench for Saturday's 3-2 league win over Racing Santander.

Spanish newspapers reported on Tuesday that the 31-year-old had told Real director of football Emilio Butragueno, the club's number two behind president Florentino Perez, that he wants to leave in the January transfer window.

"I don't want to go. This is false. I love Real Madrid and I am happy here," Roberto Carlos told Spanish reporters later on Tuesday.

"I have been here eight years and I have learned to live with these stories," he added.

Arguably the world's most famous left back, the speedy Brazilian joined Real in 1996 from Italian side Inter Milan and his contract at the Spanish giants runs to 2007.

However, he has publicly complained on several occasions about Perez's refusal to put him on the same highest wage bracket as club captain Raul Gonzalez, Luis Figo, Zinedine Zidane, Ronaldo and David Beckham.

The quartet all pick up 6 million euros free of tax a year.

Roberto Carlos is believed to earn around 4 million euros a year.

"But people think this is all about money. I renewed my contract in the past because I am happy here even though I have lost money."

"Other clubs have made offers for me but I'm with the best club in the world and I don't want to go. Much less now," said an indignant Roberto Carlos.

Roberto Carlos commented to local media on Tuesday that he was not angry at being left on the bench on Saturday as he had been struggling with muscular problems in his right thing for several days prior to the game.

"I communicated to the coaching staff that I was not 100 per cent," he added.

Roberto Carlos has said on several occasions in the past 12 months that he wants to finish his contract with Real Madrid and then return to his native Brazil to play for a top club there for year or two, before retiring.
