Roberto Carlos, best player of 2002 for Sportske Novosti, ahead of Zidane and Raul

Real Madrid Brazilian defender Roberto Carlos has been selected the best world player of 2002 by Croatian sports daily 'Sportske Novosti" following a survey among sub editors of 10 European sports publications.

Having won the Champions League, Europe's Super Cup and the Intercontinental Cup with his club, plus the World Cup with Brazil, Madrid left-back got 59 votes from the jury.

All the prizes went to Real Madrid players, as French Zinedine Zidane stood second with 52 votes and Brazilian Ronaldo, World Cup top scorer with eight goals, was third with 47 votes.

German keeper Oliver Kahn is fourth with 23 votes and his country fellow Michael Ballack goes behind him with 21 votes (both of them are Bayern Munich players), just ahead of Real Madrid's Raúl González, who led Sportske Novosti survey last year.
