Record number of goals scored in Monaco-Deportivo game

Monaco routed Deportivo 8-3 in the highest-scoring game in Champions League history, while Juventus advanced to the second round despite a 0-0 tie on Wednesday.

On a night that featured 26 goals, the most lopsided result was Monaco's home romp over the Spanish team. Croatian Dado Prso scored four goals, only the third time a player has done so in Europe's top club competition.

"We'll have to come back down to earth at some point," Monaco coach Didier Deschamps said. "We'll try to keep concentrated on the next games and not get carried away."

"I have a good young team with great talent and potential."

Monaco's win moved it into first place in Group C and marked the most goals scored by one team in tournament history. The previous record was by Paris Saint-Germain in 2000 when it beat Rosenborg 7-2.

Prso's four goals tied the performances by AC Milan striker Marco Van Basten and Lazio forward Simone Inzaghi.

Deportivo coach Javier Irureta said, "The team is affected, but teams and people have to learn from their setbacks, from their defeats."

Juventus, the runner-up last season, joined Real Madrid in the second stage after a goalless tie at Real Sociedad. Nine-time champion Real Madrid advanced on Tuesday with a 0-0 draw at Partizan Belgrade.

English Premier League leader Arsenal kept its hopes alive with a 1-0 victory over Dynamo Kiev on an 88th-minute goal by Ashley Cole The victory broke the Gunners' eight-match winless string in the Champions League.

Brazilian striker Giovane Elber got the deciding goal in the second half as Lyon upset Bayern Munich 2-1.
