Real want cheap defender

Real Madrid will not break the bank for a new central defender following the collapse of Gabriel Milito's transfer. According to Spanish sports daily, Marca, the club is unwilling to part with more than €5m for a new acquisition.

The Primera Liga champions are in desperate need of another defender, and risk going into the new campaign with only two recognised centre backs - Ivan Helguera and Francisco Pavon. Real Madrid B graduate Ruben has been drafted in, but looked desperately short of quality in his few outings last season.

Marca reports that Real have been in contact with financially troubled Roma over Walter Samuel and Valencia regarding unsettled Argentine Roberto Ayala. Although these targets appear realistic, the €5m price tag does not, as both men would cost at least three times that amount.

The Spanish giants' task appears a tough one. Sporting director Jorge Valdano wants an established defender with European experience.

The only viable option that fits Valdano's bill seems to be Jaap Stam. Lazio's monetary woes are well-documented, and a small bid could capture the giant Dutchman. However, the Italians have recently paid up late wages to 31-year old Stam, who now insists he is committed to the club.

The defensive conundrum has cast a dark cloud over new boss Carlos Queiroz's pre-season preparations. President Florentino Perez's reluctance to strengthen the back line was a source of major aggravation for former coach Vicente Del Bosque, and Queiroz must be dreading a similar situation developing under his stewardship.
