Real wait on Chelsea bid for Roberto Carlos

Real Madrid said they were waiting to hear from English Premiership side Chelsea on a reported 20 million pound bid for Brazil World Cup star Roberto Carlos.

"Chelsea have not made an approach for Roberto Carlos," the Spanish club's director of football Jorge Valdano told the Marca sports website.

But he added neither the player nor his agent had been in touch.

The Brazilian had first told BBC Radio Brazil he would be leaving but appeared to have changed his mind after Madrid's 4-1 defeat by Real Sociedad last Sunday saw the club finish fourth in the league and condemned to qualify for the Champions League.

The 31-year-old had reportedly been set to sign a deal which will see his wages double to 120,000 pounds a week at Chelsea.

Real lost their last five matches of the campaign which led to the dismissal of Carlos Queiroz.

No-nonsense new coach Jose Antonio Camacho will want to sort out the player's future very quickly.

Camacho's arrival could also spell trouble for David Beckham as he prefers his players to be footballers rather than fashion icons.
