Real Sociedad coach: I knew Xabi would choose Liverpool over Real Madrid

Real Sociedad coach Jose Mari Amorrortu says he always knew Xabi Alonso was on his way to Liverpool when he arrived at the club in the summer.

Amorrortu insists Liverpool were always in pole position for Xabi, despite the rival interest of Real Madrid.

"We knew that he would finish at Liverpool, although it was spoken more of him joining Madrid. That forced me not to think about him. I didn't forget him because he is an exceptional player and a wonderful local product, but always I knew that this year he would not be with us."

"Xabi is a player of world-wide stature. He has the play clear in his head before he gets the ball and makes the most complex look easy. He is an example for the young people."
