Real should forget about Zidane, says Agnelli

Juventus have scuppered Real Madrid's attempts to sign Zinedine Zidane by telling the Liga champions that their France midfielder is not for sale. "I absolutely refuse to sell Zidane," declared Juve president Giovanni Agnelli.

Manager Carlo Ancelotti was quick to back up the Juve chief. "Zidane will stay with us," he said.

Playmaker Zidane has fuelled speculation of a summer move to Madrid by revealing that he is desperate to play Liga football. "I feel now that if I leave Italy, my main ambition will be to play in Spain," he said.

Spanish television station Rai 1 reported that Real are willing to offer £10 million plus midfielder Claude Makelele and defender Michel Salgado for the Frenchman.

Zidane, 28, claimed that winning the Champions' League was his motivation for wanting to play in the Spanish Primera.

"I still haven't won the Champions' League and it feels like something is missing. If I could win that, then I'd have won just about everything – and you play the game to win. The only thing missing for me is that medal, then I would be complete."

Meanwhile, Juventus chairman Umberto Agnelli was keen to emphasise how well Juve have done this season in the face of stiff competition from Serie A leaders Roma.

"Even if we only manage to come second it will still be an excellent result. We will reinforce the team but keep the same balance it has now. I don't think we will need so many new players," he added.

Juve remain keen to sign a goalkeeper to replace Edwin van der Sar after moves to sign Parma's Gianluigi Buffon failed.

The Turin giants are also looking to buy a striker and are reported to be keen on Inter star Christian Vieri as well as Valencia's Norway international John Carew.
