Real row a boost for Tottenham

Tottenham's prospects of signing Fernando Morientes appeared to increase today with the news that he has had a major bust-up with Real Madrid.

Spurs have been attempting to pull off a £15million coup by capturing Morientes for some weeks now.

It was felt the audacious move was floundering after the proposed move of Ronaldo to Real Madrid fell through.

But it is believed there has been a huge row between Morientes and Jorge Valdano, Real's director of football, after Valdano tried to sell the player behind his back.

Spurs are also expected to make a shock bid for Eidur Gudjohnsen before Saturday's transfer deadline. The Chelsea star is the latest name to be linked with Spurs as they make desperate efforts to secure a top striker.

The player's agent, Peter Harrison, insisted Chelsea had not received an official approach from Spurs but added: "Nothing surprises me in football."

Gudjohnsen has had a difficult summer, being linked with Sunderland and Blackburn after failing to agree on an improved contract.

It was also reported this morning that the advisers of Lazio striker Hernan Crespo were in London negotiating a loan deal with Spurs. And Leeds striker Robbie Keane has alerted the club by demanding a first-team place at Elland Road.
