Real Madrid urge Chelsea target Roberto Carlos to begin contract talks

Real Madrid sports chief Jorge Valdano has urged Roberto Carlos to open new contract talks with the club.

The Brazilian has said he doesn't want to consider a new deal until his present contract expires, but Valdano is keen to tie up Roberto Carlos' future as soon as possible.

Chelsea are monitoring the situation and the wing-back's future at Real has been questioned after he was booed by the Santiago Bernabeu crowd last week.

"The public is very demanding and they adore him," insisted Valdano. "We must find an agreement. The player deserves to continue to play for Real."

"It would be better if we did not repeat what happened with Michel Salgado. Soon we will have informal talks."
