Real Madrid to bid for Salas?

According to the European press, Real Madrid and Lazio have begun serious negotiations over the future of striker Marcelo Salas.

Roman press are reporting that the venerable Spanish club are preparing to speak to the player's agents, Argentine Gustavo Mascardi and Fernando Hidalgo, with an offer apparently in the range of $26 million.

However, the situation will, as usual, depend on Salas’ decision, whose contract expires in 2003. Salas has rejected offers from Inter and Parma as well as Manchester United over the last year.

Lazio president Sergio Cragnotti will personally conduct the negotiations, however he may not count on the approval of coach Dino Zoff, who wants to have "El Matador" for the next season.

Salas will be on the sidelines today for the match against Napoli, after a 100 percent recovery from a right knee injury.

Meanwhile, Marcelo Salas pointed out he is ready to play for the Chilean national team while there’s still hopes of qualifying for the World Cup Japan-Korea 2002.

In an interview with the Chilean daily "La Segunda", Salas expressed his intention to play against Paraguay, on June 2 in Asunción, so as to help the team.

"We are almost eliminated, but we still have mathematical chances and while they exist, we have to play them out." However, he said that his participation in the Chilean national team will depend on Lazio’s authorization.

Asked about Iván Zamorano’s resignation from the Chilean squad, Salas said this is a decision to be respected, but the return of the striker of Mexico’s America would be "better for us".

Finally, referring to his future, Lazio’s number nine said he is flattered about the rumours concerning his transfer to other European teams, but he will evaluate his future in June this year.
