The reports claim that Real have already put a firm offer on the table for the 26-year-old frontman.
Madrid are believed to have offered defender Michel Salgado plus £12million for Montella, who is a regular in the Italian national side.
Montella has struggled to make the grade in the Roma first team with coach Fabio Capello preferring to field Gabriel Batistuta, Del Vecchio and Totti ahead of him.
