Real Madrid's Ronaldo: I did everything I could for Man Utd

Real Madrid signing Cristiano Ronaldo insists he parted company with Manchester United in the best possible way.

He told The Sun: "The only thing I am not happy about in my final year was that we could not win the Champions League final again but I did all I could for Manchester United."

"I appreciate that United accepted to let me go and I think that I ended my time at the club in the best possible way."

"I don't think anyone can look at my recent years at United and say that I did not do my best."

"Even after I was close to Real Madrid last year and stayed at United, I was focused in giving everything I had in me."

"We won the championship for the third year in a row and reached the second Champions League final in two years."

Ronaldo says he left Old Trafford with Alex Ferguson's blessing and the United boss even shared a joke with the forward, who spent six seasons in Manchester.

He added: "He said 'congratulations'. I think he knew it was the right time for me to move on and I think he acknowledged that I needed to go."

"He joked with me and told me that with all the offensive players at Real Madrid, I'd end up playing as a central defender."

"That was just his way of saying 'good luck, son'. I did not get a chance to say goodbye to the fans but I hope they know that I enjoyed every moment playing at Old Trafford."
