Real Madrid's Owen open to Newcastle move

Real Madrid striker Michael Owen is open to a move to Newcastle United.
 
The Geordies had given up on signing the England striker after he said he wanted to join a club with a real chance of Premiership and European glory.

But Real Madrid star Owen, 25, has now indicated he would consider a switch to St James' Park and the prospect of reforming his old England partnership with Alan Shearer appeals.

A return to Anfield is still the preferred option now that a bid from Manchester United boss Alex Ferguson looks unlikely.

But the Newcastle board are prepared to meet Real's £11million asking price and chairman Freddy Shepherd is willing to fly to Spain at a moment's notice if he is given any more encouragement.

A Newcastle insider told The Sun: "We found the money to sign Alan Shearer and look at the return in goals he has brought us."

"We will do the same for Michael if he becomes available to us."
