Real Madrid's Marcelo: I have always wanted to play for Brazil

The left-back is set to make his first appearance for his national side under coach Mano Menezes, and says he has never lacked commitment for his country.

Real Madrid full-back Marcelo has insisted that his loyalty to the Brazilian national team has never been in question, as he prepares for the Selecao's upcoming friendly against Ghana.

The 23-year-old has six caps for his nation, but is yet to appear in one of Mano Menezes' teams despite a number of calls into the squad. He also found himself written out of Brazil's Copa America plans following a late withdrawal from the squad to play Scotland, alleging an injury which was disputed by the coach.

Speaking ahead of Monday's match at London's Craven Cottage, however, Marcelo affirmed that he is 100 per cent committed to the national team, and claimed he had never intentionally missed an international call-up.

"It could look like a lack of commitment, but I have always wanted to be in the Selecao and help my team-mates. I have served the team from the very start, even on long trips. They are the best, so why wouldn't I want to be involved?" the player told reporters at Thursday's press conference.

"It is not like me to ask to be withdrawn from the Selecao."

The injury to Barcelona's Adriano puts Marcelo in the driving seat to start on the left against the Africans, as one of just three remaining widemen in the squad along with Dani Alves and young Santos star Danilo.
