Real Madrid's Makelele a step closer to Man Utd

Manchester United are closing in on Real Madrid midfielder Claude Makelele.

The French international's representatives are believed to have been in contact with United since early December, with no sign of an agreement over a new deal with Real on the horizon.

"Why would I stay in Spain if another club values me more," Makelele said yesterday.

United are reportedly willing to offer £7 million for the midfield anchor, with manager Sir Alex Ferguson viewing Makelele as a long-term replacement for skipper Roy Keane.
