Real Madrid's Beckham to be first £100M man

England skipper David Beckham could become the first £100 million footballer.

The Real Madrid midfielder stands to earn millions if he leads England to success at this summer's European Championships.

Vodafone communications director Mike Caldwell, whose sponsorship deal with Beckham recently expired, told the Sunday Mirror: "If Beckham returns from Portugal framed in a Bobby Moore-type picture on the shoulders of his team-mates with the European Championship trophy held aloft then his iconic status would go through the roof."

"The commercial potential for him as a footballer would be unprecedented and the rewards that would come with that would be frightening."

"Only Bobby Moore has done that before as an England captain and if Beckham could emulate him then the reaction would be something we have never seen before from a commercial point of view."

He added: "Marketing guys everywhere would want a piece of David and the spin-offs would be huge."

"Knowing David, though, it will be national pride that will be on his mind in Portugal instead of cash."

He added: "He's up there with Tiger. He's recognised by people in countries all over the world - from the young to grannies."

"He transcends all the boundaries and is admired by football fans and non-football fans."

"He's more than a footballer, he's a lifestyle brand and if England are successful in Portugal he will go on to an even higher level of commercial value."
