Real Madrid receive letter from RFEF confirming Alaba’s goal vs Elche should have stood

According to a report from Diario AS (h/t Madrid Zone), Real Madrid have received a letter from the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) saying that the goal scored by David Alaba against Elche on Wednesday was wrongfully disallowed.

Real Madrid emerged 3-0 victors over Elche at Estadio Manuel Martin Valero, with goals coming from Federico Valverde, Karim Benzema and Marco Asensio.

During the game, though, Los Blancos had as many as three goals chalked off for offside. The first victim of the VAR call to rule out a goal was Benzema, following which Alaba also had a strike erased. The former was denied another effort in the second period by VAR.

Now, though, RFEF has confirmed to Real Madrid in a letter that the goal scored by Alaba, which was chalked off for Benzema being offside in the buildup, should have stood and there was a glitch with the VAR.

The Spanish Football Federation has confirmed that there was an issue with VAR’s technology last night, as it called offside on Benzema on Alaba’s goal by marking his elbow. The incident has reportedly been noted and the concerned parties are working to fix it.

With the RFEF admitting that they got it wrong on Wednesday, Real Madrid are said to have issued a friendly response, stating they understand mistakes like these happen. But the reigning champions of La Liga have requested for such errors to be avoided in the future as it puts the integrity of the competition at risk.

The win against Elche meant that Los Blancos are now 3 points clear of Barcelona at the top of the league table.
