Real Madrid president: Woodgate knows what is expected of him

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez is convinced Jonathan Woodgate's bad-boy days are behind him.

Eyebrows have been raised over Woodgate's signing from Newcastle United given the England international's turbulent background.

But in his presentation speech on Saturday, Perez did not back away from Woodgate's past and insisted the 24 year-old's character was not in question.

"Without a doubt the choice of Jonathan is the correct choice. He already is a magnificent player," declared Perez. "For many he is a central defender with a big future in Europe."

"Despite still being a young person who is 24 years old, he is a mature and serious player on the pitch."

"He knows perfectly what are the qualities we value at Real Madrid and our history and our culture. Real Madrid and their players must be as respectful and exemplary inside as outside the pitch. Jonathan, welcome to Real Madrid, this is your home and you can realise all your dreams here."
