Real Madrid president: Beckham a world icon

David Beckham was paraded in front of the world's media last night as Real Madrid's latest galactico.

"This is a dream that has become reality," said Beckham after he was presented his No23 Real shirt by club legend and honorary president Alfredo di Stefano.

"I have always loved football. Of course I love my family, I have a wonderful life, but football is everything to me."

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez described Beckham as: "An icon of the planet. He is a symbol of post-modernity. But Real Madrid have signed him because he is a great footballer."

He added, "Beckham is a footballer of great strength and character."

Perez, referring to Old Trafford's nickname as the 'Theatre of Dreams', said: "Beckham is leaving the Theatre of Dreams for the Team of his Dreams.

"Welcome, David, to the Liga of Dreams!"
