Whilst Real Madrid have plenty of strength in depth and some highly rated young prospects, many within the club believe they do not have enough back-up at left back.
Brazilian Marcelo is the current Real Madrid first choice left back but Zinedine Zidane does not have as much strength in this position as on the right (Dani Carvajal, Danilo and Alvaro Arbeloa).
Well respected Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio reports on Sunday that in the final week of the January transfer window, Real Madrid will move for Wolfsburg left back Ricardo Rodriguez.
Los Blancos are preparing a 40 million euro offer for the 23-year-old Swiss international, who has established himself as one of the best left backs in Europe.
Like Marcelo, Rodriguez would add a lot going forward and is a player that could start for Real Madrid’s first team for many years.
Wolfsburg will likely hold out for 50 million euros and try and hold onto Rodriguez until the end of the season.
A loan back to Wolfsburg from Real Madrid ensures the left back stays in familiar surroundings until Euro 2016 and Los Blancos can register the player before the transfer ban comes into effect.
Previously, in the cases of Kevin De Bruyne and Ivan Perisic, Wolfsburg have sold big name players, at the end of the transfer window after mega offers.
