Real Madrid move for Roma defender Chivu

Real Madrid President Fernando Martin is looking to make Romania international Cristian Chivu the first new face of a harder-edged 2006-2007 squad.
 
Madrid's interest in the Roma central defender is not new, having coveted him for the last two seasons.

A clause in Chivu's contract could see him move for as little as £6 million, making him a bargain at just 25 years of age.

Reports in the Spanish press indicate that Martin met Roma representatives in Madrid on Sunday to discuss the deal.
