Real Madrid midfielder likely to play regularly in attack next season

Federico Valverde has been one of the most impressive performers for Real Madrid this past season.

The Uruguayan was involved in 11 league goals, even though he could not help the club retain the league title.

What was particularly interesting about Valverde’s season is the way Carlo Ancelotti utilised his services in the attack. Normally known for his endeavours in midfield, Valverde was mostly deployed in the wide attacking role on the right flank this past season.

He did not disappoint either, racking up five goals and three assists in 17 matches in the right-wing position.

And it appears his performances have not gone unnoticed, with a recent report from MARCA (h/t Madrid Xtra) suggesting that the Uruguayan international is set to continue in attack next season.

The report points out how Real Madrid are unlikely to sign any new players this summer, especially with Barcelona stepping up their efforts to sign Arda Guler.

With that in mind, Ancelotti is likely to deploy Fede Valverde in the wide attacking role, rather than his preferred central midfield position. His decision is likely to be influenced by the arrival of Jude Bellingham, who should occupy either the number eight or the number ten role.

Ancelotti is even considering shifting to a 4-3-1-2 formation in order to accommodate Bellingham into his plans next season. But should he continue with the 4-3-3, there is a possibility Valverde could be given the nod in the right-hand side of the attack.

With Valverde on the right, Vinicius Junior is set to occupy the left, thus allowing Rodrygo Goes to potentially lead the Real Madrid frontline. It could be an interesting formation, which could really pay off, if it works.

However, Ancelotti might shift Valverde back to his midfield role if he fails to continue his blistering form in attack next season, which in turn, could see Joselu receiving more minutes.
