Real Madrid, Man United win on road

David Beckham set up the first of two late goals by substitute Fernando Morientes, sending Real Madrid past host Wisla Krakow of Poland 2-0 in Champions League qualifying Wednesday.

Morientes scored in the 72nd minute, just four minutes after replacing Zinedine Zidane, when he converted a half-volley from Beckham.

Morientes also scored for the nine-time champions on a cross from Roberto Carlos in second-half injury time. Morientes had nine goals last season in the Champions League for Monaco.

Manchester United also won on the road, defeating Romania's Dinamo Bucharest 2-1.

The return matches will be in two weeks, with winning teams advancing to the group stage of Europe's No. 1 club competition.

Quinton Fortune's own goal in the 10th minute gave Dinamo a 1-0 lead over Man United. But the English club rallied as Ryan Giggs equalized in the 38th with the winner coming on a second-half own goal by Angelo Alistar.

United played without nine regulars. Strikers Ruud van Nistelrooy and Louis Saha and defender Wes Brown were injured, Gabriel Heinze and Cristiano Ronaldo were at the Olympics and defender Rio Ferdinand was suspended.

Inter Milan got an important away goal in a 1-1 draw at Switzerland's Basel. Brazilian Adriano scored Inter's goal shortly after flying home from his father's funeral, and dedicated the goal to his father.

"I'm satisfied with what I have done tonight," he said. "I was very tired from the trip but I think I have helped the team."

Spain's Deportivo was held to a 0-0 draw in Dublin against Shelbourne. The Spaniards were semifinalists last season in the competition.

Bayer Leverkusen, the losing finalist two years ago to Real Madrid, beat Czech side Ostrava 5-0.
