Real spent their summer transfer budget on bringing Ronaldo to the club from Inter Milan, but sports chief Jorge Valdano is now making plans to fund a move for a new defender.
Brazilian striker Tote and Fernando Morientes are both expected to be made available next month to raise funds for Valdano's defensive target.
AS Roma are keen to sign Morientes and could be interested in a swap involving Walter Samuel.
Also in the frame for Real are Borussia Dortmund defender Christoph Metzelder, Brazilians Edmilson and Lucio and AS Monaco star Rafael Marquez.
The push for a new defender is also coming from trainer Vicente del Bosque, who would like to move Ivan Helguera back into midfield.
