Real Madrid into last 16 after Rosenborg win

Nine-time European champions Real Madrid qualified for the last 16 of the Champions League with a 2-0 win over Rosenborg in their group F match.

Real, who thrashed Rosenborg 4-1 at home two weeks ago, weathered an early storm and a late charge to win a match in which the home side failed to convert a host of opportunities.

An unfortunate own goal by home defender Mikael Dorsin and a strike from Guti set up Real, for whom goalkeeper Iker Casillas stood out under a barrage of 21 shots.

The result meant Real qualified for the last 16 along with group F leaders Lyon, who thrashed Olympiakos 4-1 to put them on 12 points. Real are three points adrift while Rosenborg sit in third on three points and the Greek side remain pointless in fourth.

Rosenborg opened brightly with Daniel Braaten being given enough space in midfield to advance and trouble the Real defence, one shot in the second minute just going over the bar of Iker Casillas.

Real's first chance came after 11 minutes but David Beckham saw his shot go wide after being played through by a dangerous-looking Robinho.

Just two minutes later, Robinho latched on to a long Casillas clearance and fired a shot that had Rosenborg keeper Espen Johnsen beaten but the ball flew just wide.

Sergio Ramos also went close for Real with a third long-range effort in as many minutes.

Real finally notched up a goal in the 26th minute when Dorsin deflected the ball into his own net off his thigh after Johnsen had only been able to turn away a Robinho shot.

Casillas was called upon to produce an acrobatic save at the other end as Rosenborg came back immediately, and the Spanish keeper also produced the goods to turn away a shot by Oyvind Storflor in the 38th minute.

Just before half-time, Real dealt a killer blow to Rosenborg when Guti scored from close range after Dorsin's tackle on Robinho pushed the ball into the striker's path.

English defender Jonathan Woodgate gave Bratislava a free-kick chance after he tripped Storflor on the edge of the penalty area, but Frode Johnsen blasted the ball into the wall.

Casillas was again called into action with a good stop off an optimistic shot by Roar Strand. Minutes later the Real keeper fumbled in the area and presented Thorstein Helstad with a golden opportunity, but his effort was snatched and is blocked by Woodgate.

Braaten skinned Guti in the 82nd minute to set up a shooting chance, but Casillas was alert and produced a good save on the dipping shot.

In a frantic few minutes, the keeper was again in action, forced to tip over a dipping cross that looked to be drifting inside the top corner.
