Real Madrid have not offered renewal to defender despite player being seen as important by the staff

Real Madrid’s results this season may be impressive, but that does not hide the fact that there are glaring deficiencies in the squad.

From the thin defence to the relative lack of options in the final third, squad depth is a section the club must soon look to improve.

The left-back position is another department suffering from a relative deficiency of resources on that front. Los Blancos may have Ferland Mendy and Fran Garcia as viable options, but both players come with their own sets of limitations.

Heading into the summer, a new signing is thus seen as a fundamental requirement. The future of Mendy, in particular, appears to be in jeopardy.

As relayed by MARCA in a recent update, Ferland Mendy is loved within the club. However, his regular muscular injuries, three this season to be precise, have affected him deeply.

The Frenchman’s contract in Madrid ends in 2025 and he is yet to receive a renewal offer from the board.

Everyone in the staff and the club offices is aware of what he brings to the table and the defensive balance he offers. In fact, many in the management see him as ‘life insurance’ for the defence.

Yet, a renewal does not appear to be on Real Madrid’s agenda considering the player’s fitness struggles and relative deficiency in the final third.

Real Madrid have several big-name targets for the upcoming summer transfer window including Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe. Arguably the next biggest name the Merengues are eyeing is Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies.

The Canadian left-back has established himself as one of the best in the business in recent years and is known for his blistering pace on the counter.

Needless to say, he would be an ideal fit for Real Madrid’s style of football which has lacked an attacking left-back for years.

It is an open secret that Davies wishes to join the Spanish giants, although it will not be easy to push a move through. After all, Bayern Munich are going all out to renew the player as per recent reports.
