Real Madrid had jet ready for Arsenal's Vieira

Real Madrid were so convinced they had Arsenal midfielder Patrick Vieira signed up that they organised a private jet to fly him from London yesterday.

Vieira's decision to stay at Highbury has infuriated Real, which are laying blame squarely at Arsenal.

A Real insider told The Sun: "There was no way we were going to agree to the price increase at such a late stage."

"We were not prepared to pay that amount for a 28 year old, especially a defensive midfielder."

"We were offering the player the chance to be a part of the best team in the world and not many players get that privilege. But Arsenal changed the terms and Vieira is still theirs."

Vieira said: "Some fans will be happy for me to stay but others will ask why I have said nothing for eight weeks."

"I can understand their feelings, yet this was a decision I had to make by myself and for myself."

"I have always been clear with Arsenal and Real Madrid and decided it would be better to stay."
