Real Madrid encouraged with Gerrard's London snub

Real Madrid chiefs have been encouraged by news that Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has pulled out purchasing two London homes.

Gerrard's actions are clear indication that he is getting cold feet over a proposed summer move to Chelsea - and has been welcomed by Real Madrid powerbrokers.

The Liverpool captain remains high on Real president Florentino Perez's wanted list for next season and this week's revelation has already been discussed at board level with vice-president Emilio Butragueno and general manager Arrigo Sacchi.

Perez has informed Sacchi that a central midfielder is a must for the summer market, which led to last week's approach to Arsenal about captain Patrick Vieira.

Real are prepared to meet Liverpool's £30 million asking price, but Perez won't push through a deal until he gets the go-ahead from Sacchi and coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo.

While former trainer Jose Antonio Camacho pleaded with Perez to bid for Gerrard last summer, Luxemburgo is less enthusiastic as he sees the England ace lacking the defensive qualities his midfield needs.
