Real Madrid director general Jorge Valdano has declared that Los Blancos are not dependent on Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo and said that the team can "work perfectly" without him in the team.
Much has been made of the fact that Madrid's only defeat of the season so far came while Ronaldo was absent through injury but Valdano insists that the 2-1 defeat to Sevilla on Sunday was not a result of Ronaldo's absence. He did say however that Madrid missed the talented winger.
"How is he [Ronaldo] not going to be missed?" he responded when asked about the former Manchester United man.
"That does not mean that the team can work perfectly without him. It's too early to say that there is dependency," Valdano added, according to AS, before leaping to the defence of Marcelo.
"He's [Marcelo] a left-sided player and central midfielder. He's 21-years-old. He is very young and has been making progress. We must not condemn him for one game. We believe he has a future here."
