Real Madrid defender receives call from Saudi Arabia, will only leave for a generous offer

Over the past few days, there have been rumblings about Real Madrid defender Ferland Mendy emerging as a potential transfer target for clubs in Saudi Arabia.

Building on that chatter, MARCA has now reported that Mendy has indeed already received a call from Saudi Arabia about a transfer in the ongoing transfer window. The call was made to check the 28-year-old’s current situation in Carlo Ancelotti’s plans for the upcoming season.

Mendy endured a disappointing 2022/23 campaign riddled with injuries while he was not at his best when fit and available either. As such, Real Madrid have plans to sell him this summer to recoup some cash after investing over €100 million in transfers.

But, Ancelotti is against such an idea as he does not want to weaken his depth in the left-back position and resort to using Eduardo Camavinga at left-back like he was forced to last season.

However, Real Madrid remain open to the idea of a sale and believe that a big offer could arrive from Saudi Arabia which would allow them to recover some of the €50 million they spent on him in 2019.

Mendy, for his part, is not keen on leaving Real Madrid right away. At 28, the left-back is in his peak years and wishes to fight for his place and reclaim his first-choice status in Ancelotti’s plans.

So, the only way Mendy would consider leaving the Santiago Bernabeu for Saudi Arabia, as per the report, is if he is offered a very generous deal by the Middle Eastern outfit.

That should not be a problem for the clubs in the oil-rich nation, who have not been shy of throwing cash at players this summer. Whether Mendy ends up joining the horde of stars leaving Europe for Saudi remains to be seen.
