Real Madrid confident of Woodgate comeback

Jonathan Woodgate is doing double sessions, six days a week, to be fit for Real Madrid's first preseason session.

The England defender has never played a competitive game since arriving at Real last summer from Newcastle United because of thigh and knee injury problems.

Real medicos are quietly confident he is over the worst. Every morning Woody does weights training and running. In the evening he does swimming sessions.

A close friend told AS: "He's gone through so much this year that he is determined to get back to playing. He is working well into the evenings - every day - to be ready for proper preseason training with the rest of the squad."

Real are leaving nothing to chance and Finnish surgeon Doctor Sakari Orava receives an up-to-date report on Woody's progress every ten days.

Another five doctors also have access to the reviews and Woodgate's training is adjusted dependent on the results.
