Real Madrid coach tried to sign Liverpool's Xavier in summer

Real Madrid trainer Carlos Queiroz attempted to sign Liverpool defender Abel Xavier in the summer, it has been revealed.

Xavier is expected to begin training with Real next week ahead of completing his free transfer from Anfield.

Queiroz wanted to sign the Portugal international before the start of the season, but his move was vetoed by sports chief Jorge Valdano because negotiations were going on at the time with Valencia for Roberto Ayala.
