Real Madrid coach makes Beckham U-turn

Real Madrid coach Fabio Capello has offered an olive branch to frozen out midfielder David Beckham.

"When I see that a player is in good shape and has a good attitude then he can form part of the team, but he has to show it," said Capello before their defeat to Villarreal last night.

"He has not trained today as he is bothered by a knee problem," the coach said. "In order to be called up you have to train, I cannot call up players who don't train."

"A lot depends on his physical condition, as it does with all players."

"I don't have any friends or enemies in the squad, I just choose the best players that are available."

Capello was also asked if he had been a bit hasty in declaring an end to Beckham's playing career at the club.

"It is often possible to make a mistake. These are the decisions of the technical staff, these selections depend on the three of us who decide things."
